To explore the discrepant sense of belonging US residents of Haitian ancestry experienced in the United States during the AIDS crisis, this article exposes the dynamics of Haitian migration to the United States. It then analyses the predicament of the ‘naturalised’ and native-born Haitian-Americans when they were re-classified as ‘Haitians’ by US health officials, incorporated, with the Haitian immigrants, into the at-risk groups for HIV/AIDS, and excluded as potential blood donors. It also questions the impacts misguided policies of the same kind may have upon the US social cohesiveness when groups are marginalised as ‘others’ and are excluded from the larger US community. Finally, it petitions for the adoption of a more inclusive policy for citizens and non-citizens alike.
